Special Problem #2 – Quiz Queen

Purpose:  To compare two sets of data and use the results to determine who is a better quiz taker.

Group Size:  Up to 4

Due: _____________

April is looking over her 15 quiz scores from her Algebra 1 class.  Each quiz is out of 20 points.  Here are her 15 scores.

             15, 15, 14, 16, 15, 10, 19, 17, 14, 16, 5, 16, 18, 12, 17

May, her archrival in the class, has these 15 quiz scores.

            15, 16, 14, 15, 13, 14, 15, 15, 14, 13, 14, 14, 13, 12, 16

Both lay claim that they are the better quiz taker in the class.  You, being in Mr. Bailey's AP Stats class and an unbiased friend of both (lucky you!), will analyze and compare both sets of scores so that you can determine who is the better quiz taker.  Your paper will start off with a cover sheet, and then a short explanation of what the paper is about.  The rest of the paper will focus on the following 6 elements.  Remember, it DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A HW PAPER!!

1.  Calculate the mean and standard deviation for each girl.  Also, find the 5 number summary for each girl.

2.  Create side-by-side histograms and boxplots for each girl.

3.  Since you are a wishy-washy type of person, you decide to make a case for both girls.  Write a short paragraph that starts "April is the better quiz taker because . ." and then present evidence to support your claim.  Then do the same for May.  Your evidence needs to focus on shape, center, spread, and outliers.

4.  Both girls on Quiz 16 get a perfect 20.  Recalculate their statistics and give a description on what changes have occurred.

5.  Quiz 16 was the last quiz of the semester, and each girl is allowed to drop their lowest quiz score.  Once again, recalculate their statistics and note any changes.  Create a new set of side-by-side graphs using the girls final 15 quiz scores and compare it to the ones you make earlier.

6.  Using the results for section 5, is there now a strong case for one of the two girls to be crowned "Quiz Queen"?  Write a paragraph justifying your position.
